The end of 2008 brings some discouraging news about our kids' brains and brawn. Recent results from an international math and science test show United States students are performing near the middle of the pack compared to other countries, while their levels of obesity continue to climb.
Historically, compare fourth grade students from 36 countries and eighth grade students from 48 countries. They were tested on subjects that were common to all of the countries, including algebra, geometry, chemistry and physics. Overall, 425,000 students participated in the test, which is administered every four years.
In math, American fourth graders came in at 11th place of the 36 countries while these two trends were studied independently with plans of action developed for each. However, several researchers and a new book have been making the case for linking these two problems by showing the effects of aerobic exercise not only on a student's fitness level but also on their test scores.Earlier this month, the latest (2007) TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and science Study) scores were released. They

The idea of no-kissing signs was first suggested by Colin Daniels, chief executive of the Warrington Chamber of Commerce.
He said: "It was all a bit of fun. But now Virgin Trains have agreed to put them up as part of the refurbishment.
"They may seem frivolous but there is a serious message underneath."
Virgin say the station has become "increasingly busy" since the introduction Northwest Regional Development Agency and the Department for Transport. They are working

"Captain Eightpanther's Travellers' Digestives, them," said the imp from the doorway to his box, "saved many a , they have."
"Oh, sure. Do you use them as a raft, or just throw them to the sharks and sort of watch them sink? What's in the bottles? Poison?"
"Water."
"But Ymor's headquarters were in the leaning Tower at the junction of Rime Street and Frost Alley. At midnight the solitary guard leaning in the shadows looked up at the conjoining planets and wondered idly what change in his fortunes they might herald.
There was the faintest of sounds, as of a gnat yawning.there's water everywhere! Why'd he want to bring water?""Trust.""Trust?""Yes. That's what he didn't, the water here. See?" Rincewind opened a bottle. The liquid inside might have been water. It had a flat, empty flavour, with no taste nor smell." he grumbled The luggage gave a little creak, attracting his attention. With a lazy air of calculated menace it shut its lid slowly, grinding Rincewind's impromptu wedge like a dry loaf."All right, all right," he said. "I’m thinking."

girls are always asking me how to find a boyfriend. They label the boys that they meet at parties on campus as boyfriend potential before they get a chance to really get to know them. When you meet a girl, do you automatically down the road, you miss some important cues revealing more intimate parts of his personality. We focus on how we will look on his arm, how cute his sweater is, or even how not attracted to him you are. The thing is, guys are well aware that you are putting them through tests. They’re also pretty competitive as a sex, so it’s likely that all of those romantic rate her potential as a best friend? Most of us don’t, because predetermining the future of our friendships is unproductive. No matter how unnatural it seems to put our girls through artificial preliminary testing, we put our girls through hurdles before he can ask us on a date. While a guy may meet the preliminary criteria, boyfriend-hunting is the worst way to find a guy. When you focus on his potential

People who exercise on work days are more productive, happier and suffer less stress than on non-gym days, scientists revealed today.
University of Bristol researchers found that employees who enjoyed a workout before going to work - or exercised in the International Journal of Workplace health management, is the first of it's kind to prove that exercise during work hours has mental, as well as physical benefits.
Jo Coulson, Research Associate in the University's Department of Exercise, , said: 'Our statistical results were very important.
'On exercise days, people's mood significantly improved after exercising. Mood stayed about the same on days they didn't, with the exception of people's sense of calm which deteriorated.during lunchbreaks - were better equipped to handle whatever the day threw at them.It also found that people's general mood improved on days of exercise but they became less calm on non-exercise days. The research, published

You are surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of a multitude of people of diverse nationalities. I Jewish (!) woman, Mrs. Fassler. about the origins of tickling-induced laughter abound. One psychiatrist, Donald W. Black, found that the places on our bodies most prone to feeling ticklish relate to our reflexes, implying a connection between the playful fighting backreactions to tickling, and that even the anticipation alone can set them off.
However, one study conducted at the University of San Diego challenged these social hypotheses. Researchers created a tickle machine to test whether participants would have the same reaction to a non-human tickling sensation, and many ended up having similar responses—laughing, twitching uncontrollably—to those tickled by another person. Another study also that occurs during tickle fests and acquiring necessary self-defense skills. According to him, laughing reinforces the act as a safe, non-harmful way of learning how to protect oneself. There are also some personality theorists who postulate that laughing, and even the degree to which we are ticklish, is based on how anxious or jumpy we are as people. They believe that those who are more prone to anxiety tend to have the most uncontrolled

moment I logged on, I found it liberating. Gmail's interface was quick and intuitive, unlike any other major online service at the time. (Gmail did borrow some design ideas from Oddpost, an ahead-of-its-time Web e-mail app developed in 2002; Yahoo bought Oddpost in 2004.) Gmail was the first to display multiple messages on the same subject What separates Gmail from its rivals is a basic design philosophy: It's built for power e-mailers. Late last year I visited the Gmail team at Google's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters. Keith Coleman, Gmail's program manager, told me that from the beginning, Google aimed to build something suitable for peopas threaded conversations—a design idea that user-interface experts had long been saying would make e-mail easier to use. Switching to Gmail also freed me from worrying about how I preserved my mail—Google, whose servers are much more secure than my own computer, was taking care of backups for me.
