The end of 2008 brings some discouraging news about our kids' brains and brawn. Recent results from an international math and science test show United States students are performing near the middle of the pack compared to other countries, while their levels of obesity continue to climb.
Historically, compare fourth grade students from 36 countries and eighth grade students from 48 countries. They were tested on subjects that were common to all of the countries, including algebra, geometry, chemistry and physics. Overall, 425,000 students participated in the test, which is administered every four years.
In math, American fourth graders came in at 11th place of the 36 countries while these two trends were studied independently with plans of action developed for each. When you grow up in New York City, unless your parents keep you chained in your room, you have the benefit of being exposed to cultural diversity at its best. You are surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells of a multitude of people of diverse nationalities. I Jewish (!) woman, Mrs. Fassler. Thirty-four years after being in her class, I can still see her in my mind’s eye, barely five feet tall, blond, probably in her early forties and full of energy. It took no time at all to realize that Mrs. Fassler LOVED what she was teaching. She never confined herself to the textbook, although that was our lodestone. Even as neophytes grew up in a neighborhood in the Bronx populated by those of American, Irish, African and Hispanic extraction. Many of my friends were Spanish speaking (either Puerto Rican or Cuban), so it seemed natural to choose Spanish as a language to learn.My Spanish teacher was a teeny-tiny little

Update: Facebook has contacted us and said that the technology demonstrated at the conference was not a new service and that there have has run the gamut when it comes to advertising efforts. moment I logged on, I found it liberating. Gmail's interface was quick and intuitive, unlike any other major online service at the time. (Gmail did borrow some design ideas from Oddpost, an ahead-of-its-time Web e-mail app developed in 2002; Yahoo bought Oddpost in 2004.) Keith Coleman, Gmail's program manager, told me that from the beginning, Google aimed to build something suitable for peopas threaded conversations—a design idea that user-interface experts had long been saying would make e-mail easier to use. Switching to Gmail also freed me from worrying about how I preserved my mail—Google, whose servers are much more secure than my own computer, was taking care of backups for me.
